General information
about Muslims in the North East:
The Muslim community in the North East is relatively new in the region and their
numbers started to grow only recently with the arrival of professionals,
doctors, general workers and students from all over the world to work or study
in the North East.
Generally, Muslims are more concentrated in the big cities of the North East
such as Newcastle (which has the largest Muslim community), Sunderland, Durham,
Middlesbrough. The far you go from the city the less number of Muslims you will
find. It is usually rare to find Muslims in small villages and in the country
side but it is not a rule though as you might find a community of Muslims living
in a village or in the countryside if they are Doctors at the local hospital or
students studying at a nearby University or possibly a college.
There is no exact estimation of the number of Muslims in the North East as there
has been no research carried out about Muslims and their number in the North
East. The only thing we now is that the Muslim population in UK in general is
ranging between 1.5 to 1.9 billion Muslims.
